KUALA LUMPUR – Five officers of Tapah Prison are under investigation over the smuggling of drugs into the facility using a drone.

Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Isa said they include the officers manning the guard post, the CCTV system and those who found the drone and drugs.

Officers from Bukit Aman’s narcotics crime investigation department are handling the probe.

More officers will be questioned, as well as inmates, over the August 9 incident, Berita Harian reported him saying at a press conference in Ipoh today.

Police are aware that drones have been used before to smuggle drugs into the prison, he acknowledged.

“However, this is the first time a drone failed and crashed within the prison vicinity,” Azizi said.

He said drones have been used to smuggle prohibited items into the prison since 2022.

In the recent case, a Tapah prison official lodged a police report over a drone found on the roof of one of the buildings in the prison complex with a bag containing drugs attached to it. – August 13, 2024
