Police in Penampang arrest five teens aged 13 to 16 for vandalising a house of worship, with investigations ongoing and charges expected.

PENAMPANG: Police have arrested five teenage boys aged between 13 and 16, believed to be responsible for vandalising a house of worship at Sinundu Miracle Hill, Kampung Duvanson, Putatan, yesterday.

In a statement today, Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said initial investigations found that the incident was an act of vandalism and not related to elements of insulting or undermining any religion.

Sammy said the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief and Section 295 of the same Code for damaging or defiling a place of worship, with the investigation papers to be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor soon.

He said police viewed seriously any acts of vandalism involving places of worship as they could potentially affect public order and social harmony.

“The investigation will be conducted transparently, professionally and in accordance with the provisions of the law,” he assured.
