- Five teenage males have died after a head-on, wrong way crash along the M9 motorway in County Kildare at approximately 3am on Sunday.
- Four occupants of a second vehicle, three women and a male child, suffered serious injuries and remained in hospital receiving emergency treatment.
- Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said that a family was struck by a vehicle travelling the wrong way down the motorway. “This horrific incident, following the recent collision on the M50, shows how irresponsible and dangerous driving on the wrong side of the motorway is,” he said.
- The case has been referred to Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, which is carrying out an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
- An Garda Síochána has appointed family liaison officers and is appealing for witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage from the M9 between 2am and 3am to come forward.
