TAMBUNAN: It is important for councillors to be aware of current developments, especially in the rapidly changing digital era, said Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.
He said social media is now the main platform for the people to voice their opinions, information and criticise the government.
“Councillors need to always be aware, act quickly and be agile in managing issues so that we can erode negative perceptions and maintain the government’s reputation,” he said at the swearing-in of Tambunan Councillors for the 2025-2027 session at the community hall here.
Jeffrey, who is also State Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, reminded councillors that their appointment brings great responsibility in ensuring that Tambunan district continues to progress and is competitive.
He said Councillors are not just office holders, but individuals who play an important role as a bridge between the people and the local authorities (PBT).
“This appointment is a trust. Councillors need to function as the eyes and ears of the government and be agile in addressing the people’s issues to preserve the well-being of the community and the image of the government,” he said.
He asked Councillors to be proactive in generating ideas and taking innovative steps to develop the local economy and improve the quality of life of the residents.
Jeffrey also emphasised that the beauty and cheerfulness of this district depends on the collaboration between Councillors, local leaders, government departments and the local community.
He reiterated that the district should consider planting bamboo in strategic locations to highlight the district’s uniqueness.
“The implementation of bamboo-shaped fences along main routes such as Mukim Sunsuron and Mukim Nambayan will also be considered as a tourist attraction.
“We need to be creative in using it to attract tourists, which will increase the economy of the local community,” he said.
Seventeen Councillors, including five women, took the oath before Chairman and District Officer, Sobitun Makajil.
It was also witnessed by Jeffrey, District Council Executive Officer, Rizal Maulah, heads of Sabah and Federal government departments.
They comprised Alexsius Kiob, Jinús Taguah, Justin Yonsoding, Charles Eastern Politoh, Yasin @ Archad Diasin, Tany @ Anthony Kiob, Christopher T. Podtung, Datuk Clement Jaikul, Bedi @ Jupirin Kajiun, Ar-Rafi Yassin, Hussein Hassan and Zainal Rashid.
The five women are Josephin Liew, Saldivilla Wences, Bibi @ Idah Ariffin, Paula @ Paulina Andoi and Emma Kasmir.
