KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Commissions of Enquiry Act 1950 should be amended to set a deadline for Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) reports to be tabled in Parliament, Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said today.

Wilfred said the tabling of RCI reports should not be left solely to the government’s discretion as the purpose of establishing such commissions was to present the truth to the people.

His proposal came after several lawmakers questioned the government’s decision to postpone the tabling of the RCI report on Lembaga Tabung Haji until 2026 although it had been completed in 2023.

“To me, the question is not why tabling of the report was delayed, but it should be on why the country’s legal system did not set a time period for the tabling of RCI reports in Parliament.

“So, the Commissions of Enquiry Act 1950 should be empowered so that tabling of RCI reports in Parliament does not rest solely on discretions (of the government),” Wilfred said during the debate on the Tabung Haji RCI report in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Cabinet had withheld the report to allow reforms within Tabung Haji to take place and prevent erosion of trust among its depositors.

The report was tabled today and is currently being debated in the Dewan Rakyat.
