Flash floods disrupt traffic along Keningau-Tenom road

KENINGAU: Traffic along the main Kota Kinabalu-Keningau-Tenom Road was temporarily disrupted after continuous heavy rain triggered flash floods at Km 133.95, submerging a temporary access route and leaving the road blocked by mud, debris and materials carried by strong currents.

The incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon, rendered the route impassable for all types of vehicles, causing long traffic congestion and affecting the movement of commuters, traders and residents who rely on the vital road connection between Keningau and Tenom.

The affected stretch serves as one of the main transportation links in the Interior Division, making its temporary closure a significant inconvenience for road users travelling between the two districts.

Upon being informed of the situation, Liawan  Assemblyman Dato’ Nik Mohd Nadzri Nik Zawawi immediately visited the site to assess the damage and coordinate response efforts with the relevant authorities.

He was accompanied by Keningau District Officer Norsih Nusuri, the Keningau District Police Chief and personnel from the Liawan Community Development Leader Unit (UPPM).

Despite the challenging weather conditions, Nik Mohd Nadzri was seen actively assisting in the initial recovery efforts.

Dressed in rain gear and boots, he joined residents and emergency personnel in clearing and levelling parts of the affected route while awaiting the arrival of contractors tasked with carrying out more extensive restoration works.

At the same time, security agencies and relevant authorities continued monitoring the situation to safeguard road users and expedite efforts to restore access as quickly as possible.
