NABAWAN: A total of 19 villages were hit by flash floods brought about by heavy rain that lasted till early Friday morning.
Nabawan Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin said the affected villages were based on the District Disaster Management Committee’s record (JPDB) at 3pm Friday.
He said the number of affected villages could be more as the report received was not comprehensive.
“The initial aid, including food and beverages for evacuees at the temporary relief centres (PPS), has been arranged by JPBD and coordinated by the District Social Welfare Department,” Ghani said after inspecting the flood situation in several villages and PPS centres at the Nabawan District Council multipurpose hall Friday afternoon.
Ghani instructed JPBD, led by the District Officer, to ensure that all affected heads of households (KIR) register at the designated PPS.
“This is to ensure that no one is excluded from receiving government assistance,” said Ghani who is Chairman of Sabah Land Development Board (LKTNS).
Earlier, Ghani attended a disaster response meeting with relevant agencies to ensure that aid is delivered swiftly to flood victims.
Nabawan District Officer, Ts Marshal Anthony @ Idham, who also chairs Districts JPBD said that as of Friday afternoon, JPBD had opened four PPS centres following the early declaration of a disaster in the district at around 5.30am.
He said the PPS centres are located at the Nabawan District Council Multipurpose Hall, Kampung Bahagia Community Hall, Kabangawong Cultural Hall, and Sarikan.
“The registration of affected households and victims is still ongoing and will be updated periodically,” he said.
Marshal also said five roads had been rendered impassable due to floods.
These include Jalan 38 at the Binuowu River Bridge, the road to the Butitin Dormitory, the roundabout road leading to Nabawan town, the road to the Nabawan Health Clinic, and Kampung Kalas.
In addition, four schools have been affected by the floods — SK Kampung Enam, SK Kampung Bahagia, SK Pekan Nabawan and SMK Nabawan.
