
FLASH floods in northern Sarawak caused a school in Lawas to be evacuated today about 7.45 am.
In Miri, huge trees were uprooted and toppled, damaging cars in front of a shopping complex. No one was in the crushe vehicles.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Unit did not report serious injuries during those incidents,
In Lawas, SK Siang Siang and the school hostel were evacuated.
The Lawas Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency alert at 7.45 am from the school authorities.
"The school was hit by four feet of sudden flash flood.
"Our rescue units deployed boats and teams to the school and evacuated everyone, including 56 pupils in the hostels.
"They were trapped inside the school compound as the place was under four feet of water," Sarawak Bomba said in a press update.
In Miri city, trees at a car park in the Boulevard Commercial Centre were uprooted following strong winds and rain early in the morning.
Vehicles at a parking lot were smashed by huge tree trunks.
Some districts in Sarawak are seeing extreme hot and dry spells, while other places have been hit by heavy rain and floods. – May 24, 2024.
