The recent floods have intensified across several states in Malaysia, with the tally of affected individuals rising to 26,914 as reported by noon December 28th. This figure marks an increase from the 25,763 victims reported earlier.
The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) issued a statement detailing the escalating situation. The affected populace spans 19 districts across six states, collectively encompassing 8,503 families grappling with the aftermath of the inundations.
Breaking down the figures, Kelantan emerges as the hardest-hit state, recording 21,252 victims hailing from 6,876 families. Following closely, Terengganu accounts for 5,359 victims distributed among 1,546 families, while Pahang has 209 individuals affected across 54 families. Meanwhile, Johor and Sabah reported fewer cases, with Johor registering 63 victims from 16 families and Sabah documenting 31 victims from 11 families. Currently, there are 131 operational Temporary Transfer Centers (PPS) to accommodate and aid the displaced individuals.
A detailed breakdown provided by Nadma sheds light on the specific regions grappling with the deluge. In Kelantan, districts severely impacted include Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, and Tumpat. Similarly, Pahang's affected areas encompass Jerantut, Kuantan, and Maran, whereas Sabah's Pitas district faces challenges due to the rising waters. Additionally, Terengganu's inundated districts span Besut, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, and Setiu. In Johor, the districts of Mersing and Segamat are notably affected.
In light of the prevailing weather conditions, Nadma issued a weather advisory cautioning residents of specific areas. Continuous rainfall is anticipated in regions like Kuantan, Pekan, and Rompin within Pahang. Similarly, areas in Johor, including Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Bahru, are also expected to experience persistent downpours.
The escalating number of flood victims underscores the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts, emphasizing the importance of swift action and community support during these challenging times. As various regions grapple with the aftermath of the floods, authorities and relevant agencies are mobilizing resources and efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of affected individuals and families.
