Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has announced that flooding and landslides have disrupted KTM Intercity train services along the East Coast route, causing significant disruptions to passenger operations. Several sections of the track have been rendered unsafe, prompting service cancellations to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

KTMB reported that water levels between Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah, specifically from KM493 to KM490.85, have exceeded the rail line, making the route unfit for travel. Due to these hazardous conditions, KTM Intercity services, including the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran train No. 27 from JB Sentral to Tumpat, were cancelled starting last night.

Further disruptions include the suspension of other key services such as the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran No. 26 and No. 27 (JB Sentral Tumpat JB Sentral), as well as the Shuttle Timuran (Kuala Lipis Gua Musang Tumpat). These cancellations are a direct result of the extensive flooding affecting the region.

KTMB Chief Operating Officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha emphasized that the decision to cancel these services prioritizes passenger safety above all. To support affected travelers, KTMB has assured a full refund for tickets purchased. Additionally, updates on route closures and service disruptions will be disseminated through SMS and KTMB’s official social media platforms to keep passengers informed.

In response to the ongoing crisis, KTMB has activated a flood operations room specifically for the East Coast sector. This facility monitors train movements and provides real-time updates on the situation. The company has also implemented an assistance plan to support flood victims at KTMB stations, ensuring aid is distributed efficiently and systematically.

KTMB conducts regular flood risk monitoring using daily reports from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). Priority is given to areas that are historically prone to flooding, the company said in a statement. KTMB is also working closely with relevant agencies such as the Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Fire and Rescue Department to ensure that rescue operations and incident management are carried out swiftly and effectively.

To bolster these efforts, KTMB has mobilized critical assets, including rail trolleys, to monitor water levels on key routes and assess landslide-prone areas. Additional equipment such as communication tools, emergency response kits, and safety gear has also been deployed to enhance preparedness during floods.

KTMB encourages the public to stay updated and seek assistance through the KTMB Call Centre at 03-9779 1200, its official website at www.ktmb.com.my, or its social media channels. The company remains committed to ensuring passenger safety and minimizing disruptions as it navigates the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.

These proactive measures underscore KTMB’s dedication to maintaining safety and operational efficiency during this period of uncertainty. Passengers are advised to remain patient and take necessary precautions as the company works to restore normal services.
