Floods displace over 1,200 in Selangor as torrential rains hit

OVER 1,250 people from 337 families have sought shelter at six Temporary Relief Centres (PPS) in the Petaling and Klang districts, following heavy downpours that began early yesterday morning

AS of 8:10am today, a total of 1,251 flood victims have been relocated to six Temporary Relief Centres (PPS) according to the official Info Bencana portal managed by the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

The evacuees comprise 403 adult men and 411 adult women, with the remainder made up of children and infants. Authorities also recorded 388 persons with disabilities (OKU) and 108 senior citizens among those affected by the floods.

In the Petaling district, those displaced have been accommodated at several relief centres, including Dewan Kenanga Seksyen 28 MBSA, Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 16, SMK Seksyen 16, and Dewan Camelia in Putra Heights.

Meanwhile, in Klang, evacuees have been moved to SK Sungai Binjai and Dewan Bunga Bakawali in Seksyen 35.

Not all affected families, however, have opted to move into the government-prepared shelters.

Authorities noted that some victims chose instead to stay with relatives outside the flooded areas. Others, citing previous experiences of looting during past floods, have reportedly refused to evacuate in order to guard their homes.

The flooding was triggered by prolonged torrential rain from around 2am yesterday, with several areas in Selangor, including Petaling, Klang, Sepang, Hulu Langat, and Gombak, experiencing severe waterlogging and flash floods.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as rainfall persists in certain parts of the state. Emergency responders have urged the public to follow safety advisories and prepare for possible further evacuations should weather conditions worsen. - April 12, 2025
