Flooding Forces Road Closure at Kiwa Traffic Light Intersection

Early of Nov29, police were compelled to close a section of road at the Kiwa traffic light intersection due to severe flooding. The announcement, made by the Sepang District Traffic Police through a Facebook post, detailed the affected routes and provided guidance for road users seeking alternative paths.

As of 8a.m., the closed routes include the stretch from Kota Warisan to Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi (BBST) and the road from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Kota Warisan. The decision to close these roads was taken to ensure public safety, as the rising water levels pose significant risks to vehicles and their occupants.

The temporary road closure on the BBST-Kota Warisan road has been implemented to safeguard road users from the dangers caused by rising water levels, which can lead to accidents and vehicle damage, the statement from the Sepang District Traffic Police noted. It was further clarified that the road closure will remain in effect until further notice, depending on weather conditions and water levels.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise patience and cooperate by using alternative routes during the closure period. For those traveling from Putrajaya, the police recommend exiting at the Bandar Serenia Toll Plaza to access KLIA. Similarly, drivers heading from Kota Warisan are advised to take the Ayamas exit to reach KLIA.

This section of the Kiwa traffic light intersection, which connects BBST, KLIA, Nilai, and Dengkil, is a known flood-prone area, particularly during heavy rains. Being located in a low lying region, the area often experiences water accumulation that disrupts traffic flow and creates hazards for commuters.

The Sepang District Police Department emphasized the importance of public cooperation during such incidents. We understand the inconvenience caused, but the safety of road users is our utmost priority, the statement read. They also encouraged drivers to stay updated on road conditions through official channels and social media announcements.

Flooding in low lying areas like the Kiwa intersection highlights broader issues related to infrastructure and drainage. Persistent flooding during heavy rains underscores the need for long-term solutions to improve water management systems in flood-prone areas. Enhanced drainage systems and flood mitigation measures could reduce the frequency and severity of such incidents, ensuring smoother traffic flow and safer conditions for all road users.

In the meantime, road users are reminded to remain cautious when driving through areas affected by flooding and to avoid attempting to cross submerged roads, as doing so can lead to accidents and endanger lives. The authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions evolve.

The Sepang District Traffic Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining road safety and thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation during this challenging period.
