KOTA KINABALU: Continuous heavy rain since 8 September has triggered widespread floods and landslides in Sabah, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes.

The State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said on Monday that eight districts have been affected, with six opening temporary relief centres to house displaced families.

A total of 11 centres are currently operating, providing shelter to 220 families, which involve 863 people.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor visited several affected areas, including the landslide site at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen opposite Jesselton Quay and damaged homes in Kampung Sarapung, Penampang.

He also inspected two relief centres in Putatan, namely PPR Sri Keramat and PPS Sri Serigai, to meet with evacuees and assess their needs.

JPBN confirmed that four fatal landslides have been recorded in Kampung Sarapung, Penampang, Kampung Marahang and Kampung Mook in Papar and Kampung Cenderakasih in Kota Kinabalu.

Authorities said several main roads have also been blocked by landslides, requiring detailed assessment and action from the Public Works Department.

The State Government is working closely with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to channel financial aid, install Bailey bridges and provide other necessary support.

Each affected family registered with the Welfare Department will receive RM1,000 in cash aid, while the next of kin of those who died will be given RM10,000, alongside food baskets for all impacted households.
