The recent onslaught of floods in Terengganu has significantly impacted 28 schools across four districts. These floods, part of the third wave striking the state since last Saturday, have prompted a collective effort to ensure the schools are ready for the upcoming academic session starting on January 2.

Azman Othman @ Abdullah, the State Education Department's deputy director in charge of School Management, outlined a comprehensive clean-up plan set to take place from December 28 to January 1. This operation will involve the collaborative efforts of the District Education Office, school administrations, and the local community.

The affected schools are scattered across various districts. In Hulu Terengganu, 13 schools, including Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lubuk Periok, SK Kua, Sekolah Menengah (SM) Imtiaz Kuala Berang, SK Sungai Berua, and SK Betong, have faced the brunt of the floods. Additionally, seven schools in Setiu, four in Kemaman, and four in Dungun have also been affected, each grappling with the aftermath of the natural disaster.

Remarkably, 47 schools in the state have been transformed into temporary relief centers, providing shelter and assistance to those affected by the floods. Among these relief centers, 32 schools continue to operate as such, pending the evaluation of the situation post-January 2 when the academic session resumes.

Azman emphasized that the decision to continue using schools as relief centers beyond the school session's commencement would hinge upon the prevailing circumstances. If deemed unsuitable or unsafe for normal learning activities, schools may opt to apply for disaster leave.

This collaborative effort underscores the resilience and dedication of the educational community in ensuring the safety and well-being of students despite the challenges posed by natural calamities. The collective mobilization for the clean-up and the adaptive use of schools as relief centers reflect the spirit of unity and support within Terengganu's educational landscape.
