SEMPORNA: Some 23 tourist boats were compounded for ignoring the safety of tourists visiting the scenic islands, here, through non-compliance of the law.

Altogether 66 tourist boats were inspected during the “Ops Bersepadu” off Tando Bolong waters by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Deputy Director of Operations of Semporna Maritime Zone, Lt (M) Muhammad Haris Azmi said the operation also involved Marine Police, Immigration Department and Sabah Ports and Harbours Department.

“This firm action proves the authorities’ continued commitment to uphold the maritime laws, including during the month of Ramadan,” he said.

According to Muhammad Haris, this operation not only aimed to strengthen maritime security control and to enforce the laws in the national waters, but also raise awareness among the tourist boat operators on the importance of safety and compliance with the law.

He said, they would continue to carry out such operations regularly to ensure that Semporna waters are safe for all.

“This operation will continue throughout the year as a measure to combat illegal activities and ensure that Semporna waters remain as a safe tourist destination,” he stressed.
