As Malaysians, we enter this Merdeka season with a familiar sight: the Jalur Gemilang fluttering proudly from government buildings, cars, and shopfronts. Every year, calls are made urging citizens to display the flag more visibly, as if love for the nation must always be shown through spectacle. But true patriotism goes far deeper than banners and buntings: it is rooted in the heart, lived through action, and proven in unity.
What many Malaysians find increasingly difficult to stomach is how some politicians hijack the Merdeka season to inflate their own image for political self-interest. They launch deceptive campaigns in the name of patriotism, divide the people through selective vigilante acts, highlight faults in minor display “blunders,” and demand that ordinary citizens show loyalty in public displays - while their own track record reeks of self-interest. They confuse patriotism with publicity, as though our devotion to Malaysia requires validation through their approval.
But the truth is this: Malaysians don’t need to be told how to love their country. We show it every day - in the sacrifices of parents working tirelessly for their children’s future, in the dedication of teachers shaping young minds, in the courage of frontliners who stood tall during the pandemic, and in the resilience of small businesses keeping the economy alive. These quiet acts of service are far more patriotic than any staged political performance.
Flying the Jalur Gemilang from our hearts means rejecting divisive politics that pit communities against one another. It means choosing fairness over corruption, integrity over greed, and unity over self-serving rhetoric. A flag on a car is symbolic, but a flag carried in one’s heart speaks louder - it drives us to act with compassion, justice, and responsibility for the nation’s future.
This Merdeka, let us remind those hypocritical politicians that patriotism is not a tool for selfish campaigns. We do not need flashy noise or "show-of-strength" protests over the Jalur Gemilang to prove our love for Malaysia. The Jalur Gemilang unite us as Malaysians that lives within us, carried in our hopes, our hard work, and our unshaken belief that this country can rise above selfish politics.
Merdeka is not about self-serving politicians - it is about us, our hearts, our souls, and our sacrifices for this country. Our love for Malaysia requires no publicity, only sincerity: the kind that seeks no recognition.
