THE Sabah Government emphasises and continues to focus on the science, technology and innovation (STI) development and culture, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said that in order to intensify STI culture and application at the grassroots level, the State Government with the help of the Sabah Technology and Innovation Development Council (MaPTIS) has implemented several new programmes such as the KSTI SMJ Tour Programme, the Sabah Science Awards Ceremony, the Sabah Astronomy Tour Programme and Sabah Malaysia Techlympics 2023.

According to him, the first Digital Internet Of Thing (IoT) Sandbox in Borneo is fully operational in Kota Kinabalu which aims to encourage a creative and innovative community, further increasing the commercialisation of local innovation.

“The State Government will also continue the rural community innovation programme through the Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) and e-Desa Centre.

The project that is currently in the process of implementation includes the construction of a Science Centre and a Maker Space at the Sandakan and Tawau State Library branches.

“Thus the State Government will create more libraries in the State that are equipped with the latest STI-related reading materials and reference resources,” he said when officiating the Sabah State-level National Science Week Carnival (MSN) 2023 and Sabah Zone-level Malaysia Techlympics 2023 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Kota Kinabalu, Aug 24. His speech was read by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif.

The Chief Minister said the implementation of Malaysia Techlympics 2023 is an STI-based competition designed to attract the interest of students and youth, especially in learning the latest technology and applying it outwardly through innovative creations such as robotics and drones.

According to him, the number of Malaysia Techlympics participants in Sabah has increased to 78,884 people this year, from 31,955 in 2020.

Hajiji said the State Government always supports and encourages the initiatives implemented under the Federal Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti).

He said the State Government’s strategic collaboration with Mosti, through Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry includes the Borneo Science Expedition which is ongoing from Aug 21 to Oct 1, 2023, covering areas such as Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Kimanis, Kalabakan and Pensiangan.

Hajiji hopes young Sabahans can take advantage of the Government’s initiative through Mosti, especially in mobilising various initiatives, programmes and activities as well as creating STI awareness and culture in an integrated manner.

“The State Government’s involvement in organising the MSN Carnival 2023 at the State level and Malaysia Techlympics 2023 at the Sabah Zone level is a manifestation of our commitment to make STI a culture among the local people.

“The implementation of this carnival is also to celebrate the diversity of STI and to provide an opportunity for local STI promoters and practitioners to highlight their technology and innovation to all Sabahans, especially those youth,” he added.

He also called on young Sabahans to take part in the carnival and the Malaysia Techlympics 2023 at the Sabah Zone level with input from Mosti and other strategic partners that will last until October 2023.
