Kota Kinabalu: Three locations deemed to be favourite haunts for “Mat Rempit” and illegal racers will be the focus of ongoing special operations by the Sabah police.
They are Jalan Kepayan Aeropod, Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen in front of the Marriot Hotel and Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen in front of Anjung Selera.
Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said residents in the three areas frequently complained about such activities.
He said since the middle of last year, a series of investigations have been carried out at the three locations by the State
Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department, as well as the Kota Kinabalu Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department.
“This behaviour (road menace) has returned, especially when traffic police are absent from the areas due to their involvement in other assignments.
“The police will make sure that ongoing operations are carried out in the three affected areas,” he said at a press conference after the handover ceremony for the new head of the Sabah Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department at the Sabah Police Headquarters in Kapayan, here, Wednesday.
He said the menace generally occurred at midnight on weekends, endangering other drivers.
“We will make sure that such activities are fully eliminated to maintain safety of road users,” he said.
