PETALING JAYA: The country’s food supply remains under control and sufficient, but prices may face slight pressure over the next three to six months, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
In a Facebook today, Mohamad said the possible price pressure was due to rising costs, including fertiliser, animal feed and fuel.
“Animal feed costs account for up to 70% of chicken production costs, while fertiliser can make up 40% to 50% of the cost of vegetable production.
“When these costs increase, market prices may also be affected,” he wrote.
Mohamad said the government had taken early steps through the establishment of the National Economic Action Council to ensure supply remains stable and prices are controlled as best as possible.
He said consumers also have a role in reducing pressure on household spending and overall demand.
“At the same time, we can all help by spending prudently, avoiding wastage and prioritising essential needs.
“Insya-Allah, Bang Mat is confident that with joint efforts, we can get through this challenge calmly,” he said.
