- The League One club explained that the Campus Collection, which included an American football top and a baseball jersey marked with 'United 93', was introduced “without understanding the historical context and associations”.
- On 9/11, a fourth hijacked aircraft – United Airlines Flight 93 – crashed in a rural field in Pennsylvania after crew members and passengers fought back
- Oxford United, formed in 1893 and promoted in 1993, took full responsibility for the lack of due diligence, immediately removed the merchandise, and pledged to review its approval processes.
- The club finished its statement by offering its “sincere apologies for this error and for any offence caused."
