In a recent controversy that has surfaced within the political landscape, former Perlis Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim pointedly criticized his ex-party president, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, for seemingly having an inflated sense of self-importance.

The specific incident that sparked this disapproval was Zahid's request to postpone his corruption trial in order to attend a cabinet meeting.

While it is not uncommon for politicians to juggle their responsibilities, the implications of this incident raise important questions about the priorities of those in power.

Shahidan's statement highlights the frustration felt by many citizens when political figures appear to prioritize their own interests over the efficient functioning of the justice system.

Zahid's case has been ongoing, and with the trial already in its final stages, it is understandable that Shahidan questions the necessity of postponing it for a cabinet meeting. The pursuit of justice should not be hindered by personal commitments, regardless of one's position.

While attending Cabinet Meetings is undoubtedly important for the proper governance of the nation, it is equally crucial for politicians to recognize that the justice system plays a fundamental role in upholding the rule of law and maintaining public trust. It is vital that political leaders lead by example and demonstrate their commitment to justice, accountability, and transparency.

The larger concern raised by this incident is the perception of entitlement and privilege among some politicians.

This is particularly troubling, given that Zahid faces a total of 47 corruption charges. Such cases are not just about individuals; they reflect the integrity and credibility of the entire political establishment. When politicians fail to uphold the principles they were elected to defend, public trust in the system is eroded.

Furthermore, Shahidan's previous rift with Umno and his subsequent victory under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner adds another layer of complexity to this situation.

Political manoeuvring should never come at the expense of justice. It is essential for politicians to focus on the needs and concerns of their constituents rather than engaging in internal power struggles.

As citizens, we must demand accountability and transparency from our elected representatives. The principles of justice and integrity should be at the forefront of their actions, guiding their decisions and responsibilities.

The case of Zahid's postponed trial raises questions about the independence of our justice system and the influence of political figures within it.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a reminder that our nation's progress relies on a strong foundation of justice and ethical leadership.

As voters, we must carefully scrutinize the actions and priorities of our political representatives, ensuring that they prioritize the interests of the nation and its people above personal agendas.

Only by doing so can we hope to achieve a society that values justice, transparency, and the rule of law for the betterment of all.
