PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today warned that external forces were working with domestic groups, using funding and influence to undermine the interests of the Malaysian government and the nation.
Anwar said these efforts emerged in response to the government and public outcry against Israel’s actions in Gaza and Palestine, and more recently, the attacks on Iran.
"I can only assure that we are certainly alert. Vigilance and preparedness are necessary. Assuming that everything is orderly and safe is a major weakness in our thinking.
"So, on matters of national sovereignty and the dignity of our people, we must have consensus even though we are aware of the risks," he said in his closing speech on a motion in the Dewan Rakyat condemning the brutal and violent attacks by Israel with the support of the United States against Iran.
Anwar’s remarks followed a question raised by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hasan (PN–Kota Bharu) citing the statement of Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, confirming that investigations were underway into alleged attempts to destabilise the government and sabotage national stability.
Mohd Khalid had previously indicated that a locally influential individual with links to international media agencies was involved.
Commenting on the matter, Anwar stressed that careful investigation is essential given the seriousness of the allegations.
"In our country, in the early years after independence, there were threats from the Communist Party of Malaya (PKM), supported by external infiltrations, which were rejected by the people and ultimately defeated.
"So, we must ensure that such possibilities do not occur again, threatening our national security," he said.
Addressing the Israel-US attacks on Iran, Anwar said Malaysia is leveraging its diplomatic relationships, including with Russia and China, to press for an immediate halt to the violent assaults.
"Statements have already been issued by Russia and China. We will assist, though I humbly acknowledge our limitations.
"Firstly, we do not maintain any relations with Israel. Secondly, we recognise that our capacity may not extend fully in this direction. But through ASEAN, Islamic countries, the OIC, and our good relations with Arab nations, we will do whatever is necessary and always provide cooperation," he said.
On the repatriation of Malaysian citizens in the Middle East, Anwar confirmed that embassy staff are working full-time to secure safe passage for those wishing to return.
"Those who wish to return will be managed through flights, although access is still limited as the area is considered a war zone. Some flights are available from Saudi Arabia via Turkey and Asia, but at much higher costs.
"Our decision is to find ways to help Malaysians who wish to come home, even though flights in the Gulf remain restricted. I cannot give more than that until the situation stabilises. But they are being monitored.
"Some have crowded embassies seeking protection. Certain embassies are congested as they accommodate Malaysian nationals who feel they need shelter," he said.
Anwar’s statements were delivered during the First Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat at the Parliament building today. - March 2, 2026
