It was reported that a foreign woman who was found begging at the start of a Ramadan bazaar at Keramat Permai, had managed to rack up RM240 in donations in just a few hours.
According to reports, the suspect was spotted holding a pink container while sitting with her arms raised to gain the sympathy of the public.
The actions of the suspect who is in her 50s, however, resulted in her being arrested in an operation carried out by a team of police officers.
Ampang Jaya District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said the suspect’s activities were uncovered through complaints made by members of the public.
“The suspect was found to be trying to gain sympathy at the location by asking for money from the public. The suspect was then arrested and an inspection of her bag found that the suspect was carrying about RM240,” he said in a statement.
He said that the investigation also found that the suspect did not have any valid travel documents.
The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 6(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1959.
Be careful with your money
The news has since found its way to Twitter, where netizens warned others to be more careful with who they give their money to.
“Call me selfish or whatever but if I beggars especially foreigners, you can’t have my money. I’d rather find someone who actually needs it.”
“Before helping someone else, it’s better for us to help our family members and neighbours,” suggested another user.
Meanwhile, a couple of users were shocked that the public had given her that much money in such a short span of time.
“Even as a seller I am not guaranteed to make RM240 in sales,” shared a user.
