A forest fire broke out near the 16 Sierra residential area in Puchong, burning through approximately two acres of land.
According to Oriental Daily, the Fire and Rescue Department received a report regarding the incident and dispatched personnel from the Cyberjaya Fire and Rescue Station, located about 12km away from the scene.
Firefighters from the Dengkil Fire and Rescue Station and Kuala Lumpur International Airport Fire and Rescue Station were also called in to assist with the operation.
Firefighters working to control blaze
In a statement, the Fire and Rescue Department said the affected area covered around two acres and firefighters were working to bring the blaze under control.
Photos circulating online showed flames and smoke coming from a forested area located close to a residential neighbourhood.
Other photos taken near the affected area also showed a table containing what appeared to be prayer offerings.
Threads posts circulating online further showed several individuals carrying what appeared to be the same type of table used to place prayer offerings in the area.
This led to speculation among netizens that the fire may have started after prayers and the burning of offerings were carried out nearby.
However, there is currently no confirmation that the individuals seen in the posts were connected to the fire.
The Fire and Rescue Department has also not confirmed that the burning of prayer offerings was the cause of the blaze, and said the exact cause remains under investigation.
Residents say fire flared up again
As of around 5pm yesterday (19 Sept), residents told Oriental Daily the forest fire was still burning and had yet to be completely extinguished.
Separately, residents commenting under a Threads post about the incident claimed that the fire had flared up again at around 2am yesterday.
The claim has not been officially confirmed by the Fire and Rescue Department at the time of writing.
Authorities are expected to determine the cause of the fire following further investigations.
