DreamWorks Animation’s “Forgotten Island” brings Filipino-inspired storytelling and an ensemble of Filipino and Filipino-American talent to theaters on Sept. 23.
The animated film follows lifelong best friends Jo and Raissa, who discover a mysterious portal that transports them to Nakali, a fantastical island inhabited by mythical creatures inspired by stories from their Filipino families.
Their adventure takes a more personal turn when they discover that returning home could mean losing the memories of their friendship. The two must then find a way to leave the island without forgetting each other.
“Forgotten Island” features Filipino and Filipino-American talent including Tony Award-winning Lea Salonga, comedian Jo Koy, Grammy and Academy Award-winning H.E.R., actress Liza Soberano and co-writer and co-director Januel Mercado.
The film’s Filipino connection also extends to its soundtrack, with Filipino girl group Bini contributing the song “A Parallel World.” The electronic-pop track, which combines English and Filipino lyrics, was released on July 23.
Bini performed the song at the film’s panel during San Diego Comic-Con in July. Its music video also features Jollibee, showing the group sharing meals and moments while in the United States for the song’s recording and related activities.
The film is part of a global collaboration between Jollibee and DreamWorks Animation. Jollibee Group Global Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Digital Marketing David Beal said the partnership centers on the themes of friendship and togetherness reflected in the film.
“Great stories and great food both have a way of bringing people together,” Beal said. “With DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island, we’re inviting friends and families to celebrate the joy of friendship — from watching the film to sharing a delicious Jollibee meal together.”
Jollibee Philippines Vice President for Marketing Dorothy Ching said the collaboration connects the film’s themes of friendship and family with Filipino-inspired storytelling.
“Our partnership with DreamWorks is especially meaningful because Forgotten Island brings together universal themes of friendship and family with Filipino-inspired storytelling,” Ching said. “We are proud to be part of this global collaboration and excited to bring the spirit of the film to Jollibee communities around the world.”
Further elements of the collaboration, including an exclusive Jollibee offer tied to the film, are expected to be announced at a later date.
“Forgotten Island” arrives in theaters on Sept. 23.
