IPOH, June 23 - The Perak Education Department (JPN) is cooperating fully with police in the investigation into an incident involving a Form One student who allegedly fell from a building at a secondary school here on Sunday.
The 13-year-old boy remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the Ipoh district police headquarters received information regarding the incident through the MERS 999 hotline at 2.49 pm on Sunday.
Police and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the alert to provide emergency assistance and begin preliminary investigations.
“An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident. At present, the police are still gathering statements from witnesses and examining all related aspects.
“As such, the public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified information regarding this incident,” Mohd Alwi said in a statement.
He also urged the public to respect the privacy of the victim, his family and the school during the investigation and treatment period, adding that the cooperation of all parties is appreciated in safeguarding the family's welfare.
Mohd Alwi said police would conduct a transparent and thorough investigation, with further updates to be provided from time to time.
In a separate statement, JPN Perak said it is also conducting an internal investigation to examine all aspects related to the incident while assisting the police probe.
“The student is currently receiving treatment in hospital. We pray for his speedy recovery and for his family to be granted strength and patience during this difficult time.
“JPN Perak has taken the necessary steps to ensure the welfare of the student’s family and provide the best possible assistance. Psychosocial support has also been extended to members of the school community affected by the incident,” it said.
The department also called on the public to give the authorities space to conduct their investigations and to respect the sensitivity of the family as they cope with the situation.
