THE Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) will take over the entire pre-university or Form Six and matriculation system starting next year.
This was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the National Education Plan (RPN) 2026-2035 launching ceremony at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) today.
Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Anwar said this meant that Form Six and matriculation students were no longer school students but had entered the higher education category.
"We have also experienced a bit of controversy every year because the elective courses are very limited, and children complain about their chances of getting a place at the university level after performing very well in the exams. Understanding this situation, I have asked the university to add elective courses.
"We will also introduce the general subjects that have been revamped in all public and private universities. Those related to the Constitution and Malaysian history will be included in the curriculum," he said.
However, Anwar said that the subjects were not too stressful and burdensome for the children.
"Let all our children master basic knowledge of the Constitution and history through the general subject.
"It is very inappropriate and unreasonable for Malaysian children not to understand the Constitution," he said.
Upgrading of teachers' rooms
In another development, Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM100 million for the purpose of upgrading teachers' rooms nationwide.
He said that the allocation should be given to ensure that facilities are upgraded, including teachers' rooms.
"The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) pathway is now open at the early stages of schooling, and the Ministry of Education (MOE) will ensure that the framework is more comprehensive and sophisticated.
"This means that the burden on teachers has increased, but we are aware that MOE is planning to reduce the administrative burden on teachers. Therefore, it is only natural that after increasing salaries, we also ensure that teacher facilities, not only schools but also teachers' rooms, are improved," he explained. – January 20, 2026
