KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Hafizuddeain Jantan, who was previously detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with a military procurement investigation, has decided to retire earlier than scheduled.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin confirmed that Hafizuddeain's lawyer had informed the ministry of his client's intention to retire, effective January 1.
“The candidate will be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for approval. This process will take some time,” he said to reporters after delivering the New Year address at Wisma Perwira.
Hafizuddeain's early retirement opens the path for the selection and appointment of a new Chief of Defence Forces – a role originally slated to be held by him.
This development is seen as a significant step in ensuring the continuity of the top military leadership amid growing public concern about integrity and discipline within the nation’s defence services.
Hafizuddeain had previously been placed on temporary leave to allow authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations against him. This measure was taken to ensure the investigation proceeded without interference and to maintain the integrity of the defence institution.
On December 31, the Ministry of Defence announced the appointment of General Azhan Md Othman as the new Chief of Army. As a result, Hafizuddeain’s anticipated appointment as Chief of Defence Forces was postponed pending the completion of the investigation.
On January 8, Hafizuddeain was remanded by MACC to assist in the ongoing probe into military procurement. This action has drawn further public attention to the case, which is considered one of the highest-profile investigations involving the senior leadership of the Armed Forces. - January 12, 2026
