PETALING JAYA: Former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming (pic) resigned from DAP today, without stating any reason, but said he is not planning to join another party in the near future, and will not seek to contest as a candidate in the next general election (GE16).
Ong, who joined DAP in 2012, said he remains committed to fulfilling the promise he made on Jan 10 to help Khairy Jamaluddin campaign in GE16, if he is given a seat to run in.
In a letter informing DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook of his resignation this morning, Ong said he will continue to serve the interests of the country through other means, including on his podcast, through his various advisory positions, and by “working with other like-minded people with common interests”.
Ong said he is grateful to have been given the opportunity to contribute to the party and the country in different ways, including as the MP for Serdang (2013 to 2018) and Bangi (2018 to 2022), and as the deputy international trade and industry minister from 2018 to 2020.
He also served as an appointed member of the DAP central executive committee from 2019 to 2022, and as an elected member of the party’s Selangor committee from 2018 to 2024.
He thanked DAP leader Tony Pua for inviting him to join the party and for his guidance, and party adviser Lim Guan Eng for paving the way for his nomination as the candidate for the Serdang and Bangi parliamentary seats, and cooperation during his tenure as a deputy minister.
