Former councillor Nachhattar Singh, alias Jagga, allegedly died by suicide at his residence in the Sandhu Patti area of Barnala town in the early hours of Monday.
According to family members, he had been under stress over a financial dispute involving colonisers from Dhuri in Sangrur district.
Before taking the extreme step, he allegedly left behind a suicide note naming Ashwani Kumar and Vinod Kumar.
His brother, Malkit Singh, a contractor, alleged that the accused had failed to return money owed to Nachhattar.
“My brother had been trying to recover his money but all his efforts went in vain,” he said.
Family members demanded strict action against those named in the suicide note and refused to allow a post-mortem examination until the accused were arrested. SAD leader Kulwant Singh Keetu also sought justice for the bereaved family.
Later, the police registered a case against the two men named in the suicide note. However, both the accused are absconding.
