Former college lecturer killed husband and wife in drink-drive crash

  • Former Fife College lecturer Sophie Hynd, 33, has been jailed for six years at the High Court in Edinburgh after pleading guilty to causing the deaths of Jatinder Kaur, 48, and Satwant Singh, 64, by dangerous driving.
  • The fatal head-on crash occurred on the B981 in Cluny, Fife, on 19 December last year after Hynd drove her Nissan Qashqai erratically following a nine-hour drinking session at a Christmas party.
  • Mrs Kaur was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, while her husband died in hospital two days later; the couple's 10-year-old son was also seriously injured in the crash.
  • Judge Michael O’Grady KC handed down the six-year prison sentence alongside a 10-year driving disqualification, describing Hynd's decision to drive as wholly irresponsible while accepting her remorse was genuine.
  • In a statement released through a law firm, the couple's three children paid tribute to their parents, saying they miss them more than words can express and will carry their love for the rest of their lives.
