LONDON, Aug 23 — Gareth Southgate’s next move has been revealed, with the former England manager set to become a technical observer for UEFA this season.
Southgate, who resigned five weeks ago after eight years leading the national team, had initially taken over following Sam Allardyce's departure in 2016.
Now 53, Southgate was contracted until December 2024 but chose to leave after England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
“It’s time for change and a new chapter,” he said after the match in Berlin, confirming it would be his last as England manager, Daily Mail reported.
In his new role, Southgate will collaborate with UEFA’s performance analysis team, providing detailed reports on both national and club competitions across Europe.
BBC sources have praised Southgate’s continued appeal: “Gareth is articulate, charming, and popular with audiences. People will always want to hear what he has to say.”
A potential role on Match of the Day would see Southgate commuting 90 minutes to Salford from his £4 million manor outside Harrogate.
The Daily Mail has also reported Southgate’s recent expansion of his property portfolio, adding five luxury apartments worth £2.4 million across Birmingham and London.
