Former lawmaker defends Trillanes, Magdalo after ex-Marines’ claims

MANILA, Philippines — Former Magdalo party-list representative Gary Alejano on Saturday defended former senator Antonio Trillanes IV and the Magdalo group following a testimony by former Marines before the Senate that included allegations against the opposition figure.

In a social media post, Alejano denied claims linking Trillanes to a supposed suitcase of money and rejected accusations that Magdalo members were involved in corruption.

“There is NO SUITCASE for Trillanes! That is clear. The truth will come out,” Alejano said.

He added that legal cases had been filed and expressed confidence that the allegations would eventually be disproven.

Alejano also addressed criticism over Magdalo’s role in efforts that contributed to the case against former president Rodrigo Duterte, saying their submissions were based on facts and documentary evidence.

“One reason why many are angry with us is they did not like that we helped put their idol Digong in jail. We went through the process in seeking justice and submitted documents based on facts. We did not invent them,” he said.

He argued that if Magdalo members had been involved in corruption, authorities during the Duterte administration would have already found evidence after examining their records and bank accounts.

The former lawmaker likewise defended the legislative performance of Magdalo-affiliated officials, urging critics to review their work at the House of Representativesand the Senate instead of relying on misinformation.

Alejano said Magdalo members have long been out of government and maintained that they did not waste public funds while in office.

He ended his post by calling on Filipinos to focus on the truth and what wasbest for the country amid continuing political divisions.
