Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was questioned by the police regarding alleged seditious remarks he made during a recent event called the "Malay Proclamation" meeting.

Accompanying Dr. Mahathir, two other individuals were also questioned by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit D5 at Yayasan Albukhary in Kuala Lumpur. These individuals include Malay Proclamation secretariat chairman Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Datuk Seri Marzuki Yahaya.

In a statement issued by Federal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, it was confirmed that the police had taken statements from all three individuals for the purpose of investigation. The investigation is being carried out under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

Mohd Shuhaily emphasized that the case is still under investigation and urged the public to avoid engaging in speculation or spreading false information that could hinder the investigative process. He further urged responsible use of social media and requested the public to refrain from sharing statements that might disrupt the country's harmony and unity, especially those related to sensitive issues involving race, religion, and royalty.

This marks the second occasion on which Dr. Mahathir has been questioned by the police in relation to the Malay Proclamation initiative, with the first instance occurring on June 2. The initiative, which aims to unify and restore the rights of the Malay community by transcending political ideologies, has garnered attention and debate across the country.

Dr. Mahathir's lawyer, Mohd Rafique Rashid Ali, has reportedly stated that any statements made by Dr. Mahathir were informed by his extensive experience of 22 years and 22 months as the Prime Minister. Rafique emphasized that Dr. Mahathir's remarks were intended to contribute to the betterment of Malaysian society, acknowledging his client's deep-rooted commitment to the country's progress.

This latest development has sparked discussions about freedom of expression, the role of prominent figures in shaping public opinion, and the legal boundaries surrounding public statements in Malaysia. As investigations continue, the nation watches closely, awaiting further updates on the outcomes of these inquiries.
