In the midst of an ongoing police inquiry into his recent remarks regarding the non-Malay communities in Malaysia, former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has brought attention to what he perceives as selective enforcement practices by both the government and the police. Speaking at a press conference held at the Albukhary Foundation, Dr. Mahathir expressed his surprise at being summoned for his comments and suggested that a potential double standard might be at play.
Drawing a parallel to a previous incident involving former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Dr. Mahathir highlighted that despite Zeti's report against officials from 1Malaysia Development Berhad, no substantial actions were taken by authorities. However, when he shared his own viewpoint, it was swiftly deemed a violation of the law. Dr. Mahathir passionately asserted that his comments were based on factual information and aligned with the constitutional provisions defining Malaysia as a Malay nation.
Dr. Mahathir's initial statements, posted on his Facebook page, ignited a vigorous debate earlier this year. He suggested that Malaysia should be recognized as a Malay country rather than a multiracial one. He put forth the notion that Malaysia is a Malay country that embraces people from diverse backgrounds.
Expanding on his critique, Dr. Mahathir argued that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was quashing opposing voices. He referenced instances where opposition candidates claimed they were being monitored by the police during state elections, interpreting this as an implied threat to curtail their freedom of expression.
Dr. Mahathir warned that these circumstances could create an environment where valid concerns are suppressed due to the fear that any dissenting voices could inadvertently cross boundaries set for discussions involving race, religion, and royalty.
He further asserted that if Malays were restrained from addressing issues directly affecting them, the fundamental principles of democracy and the purpose of conducting elections could be undermined.
Dr. Mahathir's statements have ignited a robust nationwide dialogue, prompting Malaysians to contemplate the delicate equilibrium between freedom of speech and the preservation of societal harmony. His perspective resonates across various segments of society, underscoring the intricacy of maintaining unity within a diverse nation.
