Kota Kinabalu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has appointed former State Attorney-General Datuk Mariati Robert (pic) and three others as members of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) for a two-year term effective Nov 1 this year until Oct 31, 2028.
The other three appointees are former Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun, former Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Zainun Ali, and Universiti Teknologi Mara law lecturer Prof Dr Hartini Saripan, who was reappointed for a second term.
The commission's secretariat, in a statement today, also recorded its appreciation to outgoing member Datuk Seri Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid for his service and contributions.
Welcoming the move, the Sabah Law Society (SLS) commended all four appointees while highlighting Mariati's appointment as a significant step forward.
SLS president Datuk Mohamed Nazim Maduarin said Mariati, who was admitted to the Sabah Bar nearly five decades ago, brings extensive legal experience and deep insight into Sabah's laws, institutions, and communities.
Nazim stressed that Sabah's distinct legal heritage forms part of Malaysia’s founding foundations and deserves a sustained place in institutions shaping the administration of justice across the federation.
He added that the society looks towards enduring institutional arrangements to ensure Sabah's legal experience continues to inform the judicial appointments process across successive terms.
