MACC detains ex-telecoms director for allegedly bribing a bank MD with RM8 million to secure a RM400 million loan for a fibre optic project

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested a former telecommunications company director for allegedly providing bribes totalling approximately RM8 million.

The bribe was reportedly offered to a bank’s group managing director to secure approval for a loan.

According to an MACC source, the man in his 50s was arrested at around 12.30 pm at the commission’s headquarters in Putrajaya.

He was detained when he arrived to provide a statement regarding the case.

The suspect is believed to have provided the bribe in 2012 alongside a Joint Completion Guarantee containing falsified details.

This was allegedly to fulfil conditions for a loan of about RM400 million intended to finance a fibre optic project.

MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the arrest.

He stated the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 and Section 471 of the Penal Code.

The suspect is scheduled to be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Sessions Court.
