Global fossil fuel emissions are set to hit a record high in 2025, according to a new study released on Thursday. Published annually, the Global Carbon Budget report looks at emissions of CO2 into the earth’s atmosphere via burning hydrocarbons, cement production and land use, such as deforestation.

The report always relates the numbers to the thresholds set out in the the 2015 Paris Agreement, the accord which called for limiting warming to 2 Celsius at the top but ideally 1.5 C (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 2.7 degrees, respectively), compared to pre-industrial levels.
