Fossil fuel giants should fund helicopters fighting wildfires, says Green leader

  • Green Party leader Zack Polanski called for fossil fuel producers to fund firefighting helicopters following a spate of recent wildfires across the UK.
  • Polanski warned that the country faces its biggest threat since the Second World War and urged the Prime Minister to halt new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, specifically mentioning the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields.
  • He also advocated for a robust wildfire prevention strategy, better-resourced fire services, and the nationalisation of water companies, citing leaky pipes and shareholder profits.
  • BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham joined Polanski, proposing a public wildfire warning system and suggesting that “irresponsible journalism” regarding climate change should be criminalised.
  • Both Polanski and Packham emphasised the existential threat of climate change, asserting that the UK “cannot afford not to” take immediate action.
