Four arrested after public servant assaulted in Tawau

A 30-YEAR-OLD public servant sustained injuries after he was assaulted by a group of more than ten men, including several known to him, at a restaurant near Jalan St Patrick here in the early hours of yesterday.

The attack, which occurred at approximately 12.40am, took place while the victim was drinking at the premises. According to Tawau District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin, the victim reported being struck with a glass during the incident and claimed he saw an unknown individual wielding a knife.

“The victim, who serves in a local authority department, said he was unaware of the motive behind the assault and subsequently lodged a police report for further action,” said Jasmin in a statement issued late last night.

Following the report, police arrested four local men aged between 17 and 29 yesterday in connection with the case.

The first arrest was made at 11.30am at Jambatan 3 Melati, Kampung Pukat, Tanjung Batu Laut. The suspect, aged 27, has four prior criminal records, including for drug offences and mischief.

“The second suspect, aged 29, was apprehended at the Takada Commercial Centre at 12.15pm, while two others – a 17-year-old and a 26-year-old – were arrested at 12.45pm,” Jasmin added.

One of the suspects has five prior records under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while the other two have no previous criminal history.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting. - July 24, 2025
