FOUR individuals have been arrested in Malaysia following a large-scale operation, Op Cyber Guardian, which led to the seizure of over 50,000 items containing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and adult pornography.
These materials were being shared through peer-to-peer networks via online platforms.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, confirmed that all the individuals arrested were Malaysian men from various backgrounds, involved in accessing, storing, and distributing CSAM.
“The operation, which took place in two states—Selangor and Penang—saw raids at five locations in Selangor, including Kajang, Ampang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, and Shah Alam, while Penang’s operations focused on areas within the Northeast District,” he said at a press conference.
“Among those arrested were public servants, accountants, web designers, and a technician from a private company responsible for setting up Wi-Fi systems."
The suspects reportedly used electronic devices to access and download CSAM through peer-to-peer networks. Some suspects were found sharing the material on social media platforms, while others stored it for personal use.
The majority of the illegal content was found on various electronic devices, including hard drives, mobile phones, computers, laptops, and iPads.
“The investigations are being carried out under the Child Act 2001 and the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017,” Ayob Khan confirmed.
This operation, which took place between February 24 and March 28, was part of a regional initiative involving multiple countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, South Korea, and several other Asian nations. Singapore’s Police Force led the operation, coordinating efforts to track down individuals involved in accessing and distributing CSAM.
In Malaysia, the operation commenced on March 20, with 46 police officers participating. The operation was supported by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and received technical assistance from the PDRM K9 unit.
Ayob Khan emphasised that the operation was crucial in combating cybercrime that threatens the safety of children and teenagers in Malaysia, a rising concern that needs immediate attention.
“This operation is part of our broader efforts to address the growing threat of cyber-related crimes, particularly those involving the exploitation and abuse of children,” he added. – April 4, 2025
