
After a three-day hiatus, a wet spell over the region is expected to resume from May 11, with the weather department forecasting rain over parts of Punjab and Haryana o four days during the coming week.
The weather is likely to be dry during the next two days followed by light to moderate rain at isolated places from May 11 to 14, according to a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department on Saturday. The weather is expected to be dry thereafter.
The weather had been dry in Punjab over the last 24 hours though light rain occurred at isolated places in Haryana. The day temperatures in both states were “appreciable below normal” whereas night temperatures were normal.
The highest maximum temperature recorded in Punjab during this period was 38.1 degrees Celsius at Bathinda, while the lowest minimum temperature was 21 degrees Celsius at Adampur. In Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was 39.6 degrees Celsius at Sirsa and the lowest minimum temperature was 18.2 degrees Celsius at Rohtak.
IMD expects a gradual Rise in maximum temperature by 3-5 degrees in both states during the next seven days. Thunderstorms along with lightning with gusty winds are also likely from May 11 to 14, for which a yellow alert has been issued.
The seasonal rainfall is already surplus in Punjab and Haryana by 21 percent and 51 percent respectively. From Mar 1 till May 9, Punjab received 50 mm rain against the long period average of 41.5 mm for this period, whereas Haryana received 43.6 mm against the normal of 28.9 mm.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab and Rajasthan now lies over central parts of Rajasthan at 900 meters above mean sea level, and a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from May 10.
Under the influence of these systems isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds are likely over Uttarakhand on May 9-10 and over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on May 10.
Another fresh wet spell with scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with isolated thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during May 11–14.
Isolated hailstorm activity is likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on May 11-12, and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on May 12-13, IMD said.
