Four face death penalty charge over cannabis

Kota Kinabalu: Four men were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here Thursday with trafficking 329 gm of cannabis.

No plea was taken from the four - food delivery rider Mazlan Mayasin, 45; liaison officer Abdul Manan Amjiah, 45; driver Jamil Rinoh Anuar, 37, and an e-hailing driver Mohamad Ariff Amran, 22, after the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali.

The four were jointly accused of committing the offence on July 17, this year at 7.23pm, in front of a lobby at Likas Square Apartment 1,  LikasThey were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they face the death penalty or life imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution applied for another mention date pending the chemist’s reports and offered no bail as the charge against the accused has no provision for bail.

Wan Farrah fixed Sept 15 for mention and ordered the accused to be remanded further.
