Four fined for selling contaminated food, breeding  mosquitoes

Tuaran: Four individuals were fined between RM350 and RM600 for selling food contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms and breeding insects or Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes that carry disease.

Magistrate Wan Farrah Fariza Wan Ghazali meted out the sentence to the accused who pleaded guilty separately to the charges against them.

For the first case, two accused were charged under the Regulation 39(2) of the Food Regulations 1985 for selling food contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

The third accused was charged under Regulation 39(2) of the same Regulations for selling contaminated food with Bacillus cereus bacteria.

Read more The fourth accused was charged under Section Destruction of Disease-Carrying Insects Act 1975 for breeding the Aedes Albopictus in vehicle tires.

Prosecuting Officer Shim Jik Kwang from the Tuaran Health Office appeared for the prosecution.

Meanwhile, Shim, who is also the Environmental Health Officer, said all the fines amounting to RM350 to RM600 were paid.

He hoped it would be a lesson so that the same offense would not be repeated and to prevent the community from infection.

“We hope that all food operators are always aware and take care of issues related to the safety, quality and cleanliness of food being processed and sold to the public,” he said.
