Four missing after boat capsizes in Sarawak’s Krian River

A LOCAL man and three Indonesian nationals are missing following the capsizing of a boat carrying ten workers across the Krian River in Sarawak on Friday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 5.30pm as the workers were travelling from the Sesang jetty to the Pusa jetty. According to a statement from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre (PGO), six individuals managed to swim to safety, while four remain missing.

The Malaysian missing has been identified as Mohd Asfar Sulaiman, 25. The missing Indonesians are Gunawan Pawadi, 35; Budianto Yapani, 50; and Karyono, 41.

The six survivors, all Indonesian nationals, were named as Sandi Putra, 26; Amirul, 20; Tadin, 50; Diki Sanjaya, 22; Dwi Moko, 39; and Krisna, 37.

Authorities were alerted to the incident via an emergency call at 6.13pm. A team of four firefighters from the Saratok Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Saratok) was immediately dispatched to the site, located some 56 kilometres away.

“Upon arrival at 7.10pm, the team gathered information from the survivors and company representatives. A search and rescue (SAR) operation will be launched this morning due to safety concerns,” the statement added. - September 27, 2025
