Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) is adding four extra Electric Train Service (ETS) trips between KL Sentral and JB Sentral every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until 27 December. In a statement on 24 September, KTMB said the extra trains add 63,200 seats in total, to keep up with the growing number of people travelling south on weekends.
If you’re planning a weekend in JB before the year ends, including the start of the December school holidays, you now have more departure times to choose from. Adult one-way fares start from RM73, depending on the train and class you book.
Four Extra Departures From KL Sentral And JB Sentral
Two of the extra trains leave KL Sentral for JB Sentral at 9.05am (EX9573) and 11.55am (EX9575). The other two go the opposite way, leaving JB Sentral for KL Sentral at 7am (EX9572) and 5.30pm (EX9578).
With these added, 12 ETS services now run on the route on weekends, eight of them existing trains. KTMB puts the total weekend capacity at 189,600 seats. Tickets for the extra trains have been on sale since 7 September.
Extra Trains To Ipoh This Weekend
Passengers heading north also get more seats, but only this weekend. KTMB is running eight extra EMUPlus trips from 25 to 27 September between Bandar Tasek Selatan, Ipoh, and Klang, in both directions, with 2,448 seats in total.
You can now board for Ipoh at Bandar Tasek Selatan as well as Klang. Tickets have been on sale since 22 September, so check for available seats in the KITS Style app before you head to the station.
ETS Fares From KL Sentral To JB Sentral
You can travel on this route in Standard Class on ETS Gold or ETS Platinum trains, or in Business Class on ETS Platinum. ETS Gold trains stop at more stations, so they take a little longer than ETS Platinum trains, which stop only at the main ones.
ETS fares change with demand, so weekend and school holiday trips usually cost more than weekday ones. These are recent one-way fares for adults.
Under KTMB’s ticket terms [PDF], children aged four to 12, senior citizens aged 60 and above, and OKU card holders registered with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) get 50% off Standard Class and 20% off Business Class. Students with a KTMB i-Card get 40% off Standard Class, but no discount in Business Class. Based on the adult fares above, these are the one-way prices you’d pay.
You’ll need your MyKad, or your child’s MyKad or MyKid, to claim the concession fare, and OKU passengers also need their JKM registration card. The student i-Card costs RM33 to register and lasts a year.
You can get up and stretch your legs during the journey on an ETS train. Each train has a bistro coach for snacks and simple meals, washrooms including an OKU-friendly one, a musolla with an ablution area, and luggage racks in each coach. Most seats have power sockets, and the air-conditioning runs cold, so bring a jacket. Business Class seats come three to a row instead of four, with more legroom than Standard Class.
Nearly Half The New Seats Are Already Sold
By 24 September, 46% of the 63,200 extra seats had been sold, and KTMB is asking passengers to book early.
Four of the weekends with extra trains also fall inside the year-end school holidays. According to the Ministry of Education’s 2026 academic calendar, the holidays start on 5 December for schools in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and most other states, and on 4 December in Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu.
If you’re heading to JB in December, those four weekends from 4 to 27 December are the ones to book first.
KTMB said it will keep watching ticket sales and adjust the number of trains to match demand. For now, you can buy tickets for the extra ETS and EMUPlus trains through the KITS Style app, the KTMB website, or ticket kiosks at selected stations.
