At a junction where authority usually comes in uniform, one regular stands out - on four paws.
He is known simply as John, a white stray who has become an unexpected fixture at a busy Kuala Lumpur intersection near Taman Tugu and Bukit Aman.
Each weekday morning, as traffic begins to build and the city eases into motion, John appears at the junction - not as a wanderer, but as if answering a call only he can hear.
For nearly two years, he has made this crossing part of his routine.
As traffic police step forward to manage the steady stream of vehicles, John positions himself close by, keeping pace as they move between lanes and signals. There are no instructions given, no leash guiding him - yet he remains attentive, almost instinctive in the way he follows.
He observes. He adjusts. He stays.
Now and then, his composure breaks. A sudden bark cuts through the noise of engines, as if he is asserting his own sense of order. But it takes little to bring him back - a simple gesture from an officer, and he settles once more into place.
Over time, his presence has become part of the morning landscape.
Regular commuters have grown familiar with him, some slowing just enough to pass food through the officers, others briefly stopping to offer a quick pat before continuing on their way. Even those in a hurry seem to spare a moment for the stray who never fails to show up.

The officers, too, have come to expect their four-legged companion, occasionally bringing treats in anticipation of his arrival.
Yet, for all the attention he has received, John remains largely a mystery. No one seems to know where he came from, how he got his name, or where he disappears to once the morning rush subsides.
Still, his routine is unwavering.
At the start of each week, he returns to the same junction, taking up his place beside the officers as though he has always belonged there.
In a city defined by movement, John offers something quieter - a steady, unspoken presence.
No badge. No rank.
Just a stray dog who keeps showing up.
