Four food spots in Penang’s northeast district have been forced to close for two weeks after a surprise inspection by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), along with several other government agencies.
The closures, which started yesterday and will last until May 22, were due to poor hygiene conditions after inspectors found rat droppings in food storage areas, including freezers and kitchens.
In a statement on Facebook, MBPP said the eateries were operating in unsanitary conditions that didn’t meet the required cleanliness standards.
The joint operation involved MBPP’s Licensing Department, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), the Ministry of Health (MoH), and the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
During the operation, KPDN issued four compounds totaling RM1,900 under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health issued two notices amounting to RM500 for violations related to customers smoking inside food premises, under the Tobacco Product Control Regulations.
MBPP also stated that it will continue to conduct similar joint operations with enforcement agencies periodically to ensure compliance and safeguard public health.
