Four remanded over fatal police hit-and-run linked to house burglary in Alor Setar

FOUR men have been remanded for seven days to assist investigations into a break-in case that led to the death of a police officer who was fatally struck by a fleeing suspect’s vehicle.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Siti Nor Hasliza Md Ali at the Alor Setar Court Complex and will run until 14 August.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, aged 35, was killed on Thursday afternoon near Taman Golf while attempting to intercept the suspects linked to a burglary. He was attached to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kedah Police Contingent Headquarters.

Kedah Police Chief, Commissioner Datuk Adzli Abu Shah, said the incident occurred around 3.30pm after police received a tip-off from members of the public regarding suspicious activity at a nearby residence.

“The suspects attempted to flee and in the process, struck the victim with their vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene,” Adzli said.

The suspects, aged between 24 and 26, are believed to be from Johor. One of them was found to have 77 previous criminal records, mostly for house break-ins and vehicle thefts.

Hafizul’s death a ‘great loss’

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail extended his condolences to the family of the late Corporal Mohd Hafizul, praising his bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty.

“The late Corporal Mohd Hafizul’s death is a profound loss to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the country. His courage and high fighting spirit in safeguarding public safety should serve as an inspiration to all members of our security forces,” Saifuddin said in a statement.

He assured that the welfare of the fallen officer’s family would be fully prioritised, including the swift processing of gratuity, ex-gratia payments, and other financial benefits.

“The funeral and burial arrangements will be handled with full honours by PDRM,” he added.

Saifuddin also conveyed his appreciation to all members of PDRM for their loyalty and continued sacrifice in maintaining national security.
