FOUR individuals previously remanded over a viral maid abuse case have been rearrested after two additional former domestic workers came forward with fresh police reports, according to a report by the New Straits Times (NST).
The suspects — two married couples aged between 30 and 34 — were detained at about 1.30 am following reports lodged by the two foreign women yesterday.
The victims, who had earlier been sought by authorities alongside the domestic worker seen in the viral video, were brought from Kuala Lumpur with assistance from the Indonesian Embassy.
They later filed reports at the Johor Bahru Selatan and Johor Bahru Utara district police headquarters.
Legal counsel for the Indonesian Embassy, Mohd Daud Ismail, confirmed that a four-day remand order was granted by Magistrate Chai Ing Hien to facilitate investigations under the Johor Bahru Selatan jurisdiction.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons, as well as Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
The case first drew public attention on June 14, when Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad confirmed the initial arrest of the two couples after a video went viral showing a domestic worker being assaulted by two men and two women at a residence in Taman Johor, Tampoi.
Authorities later seized several items, including mobile phones, clothing, a CCTV system, and two foreign passports believed to belong to the victims.
Initial investigations revealed that the abuse allegedly took place last year, but the footage only surfaced online on June 13.
Police had been tracking two additional domestic helpers, both in their 20s, who were believed to have fled the residence earlier this year but remained in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Consulate-General in Johor Bahru confirmed it had provided shelter and assistance to two Indonesian women believed to have been physically abused by their employers.
The consulate said it received information on June 13 from an Indonesian national, identified as YY, who alleged she had been subjected to abuse along with two others, identified as YA and SH. All three claimed they had endured repeated physical violence.
NST also reported that the case is being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault with intent to outrage modesty, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities. – June 17, 2026
